Gardening in La Alcaidesa: strong wind and sandy soil
La Alcaidesa is one of the windiest places on this stretch of coast. The Levante can blow for days, carrying salt that burns soft leaves and drying out pots in hours. Sandy soil drains very fast, so water and nutrients wash away quickly.
Plants that cope well here include oleander, pittosporum, tamarisk, rosemary, lavender, ornamental grasses and many succulents.
- Start with a sheltering row of tough shrubs, then plant softer ones behind it.
- Add compost and a layer of mulch to sandy beds to hold moisture.
