Sierra Blanca shelters Marbella from cold northern winds, giving it one of the mildest microclimates in Europe. Plants grow almost all year round, which is lovely, but it also means hedges, lawns and climbers need cutting more often than in northern Europe.
Summers are long and dry, so a reliable irrigation system is essential for lawns and large beds.
- Plan a palm pruning round every year – Canary Island date palms are especially at risk from red palm weevil.
- Rake pine needles regularly in Elviria and Las Chapas; they smother small plants and burn easily in summer.
- Cut lawns a little higher in summer so the grass shades its own roots.
