Gardening in Cómpeta: terraces, vines and cool nights
At around 600 metres, Cómpeta has cooler nights than the coast, and winters can be chilly. Spring brings fast growth of grass and wild plants on the terraces, which then dry out in the hot summer. Old retaining walls need attention too, as roots and heavy rain can loosen the stones.
- Cut back the spring growth on terraces as soon as it starts to turn yellow.
- Prune vines and olive trees in winter, while they are dormant.
- Keep tree roots and climbers away from the base of retaining walls.
