Gardener in Sabinillas

We look after terraces, communal gardens and villa gardens in Sabinillas all year round, whether you live here or visit a few times a year.

San Luis de Sabinillas is the seaside heart of Manilva, with a long sandy beach and a promenade that is busy in summer and calm in winter. Most homes are apartments with terraces, townhouses with small patios, and villas on the hills behind the town. Gardens here tend to be compact, but they work hard in the sun, wind and salty air.

As a gardener in Sabinillas, much of our work is regular garden maintenance: cutting back bougainvillea and hibiscus, trimming hedges, tidying terrace pots and keeping small lawns green. In areas such as Manilva Playa, Aldea Beach and Punta Chullera, many owners are away for part of the year. For them we offer holiday plant watering and simple garden checks, so nothing dries out between visits.

We are happy to take on small jobs in Sabinillas as well as large ones. That might be a one-off garden clearance before you sell or let your home, a new drip line for your terrace pots, or a few palm trees that need pruning. Send us a few photos and we will tell you what we suggest.

Gardening in Sabinillas: wind, salt and sandy soil

Sabinillas is close to the Strait of Gibraltar, so the Levante and Poniente winds can blow hard for days at a time. Wind dries out pots and young plants quickly, and salt spray burns soft leaves near the beach. Sandy soil drains fast, which suits Mediterranean plants but lets water and nutrients wash away.

Tough, salt-tolerant plants do best close to the sea, such as oleander, pittosporum, rosemary, lantana and many succulents. Further up the hill, where there is more shelter, you can grow a wider range.

  • Check pots and drip lines after a strong Levante – wind can dry them out in a single day.
  • Rinse salt off leaves now and then if your garden faces the beach.
  • Dig compost into sandy soil, or add mulch, to hold moisture in summer.
  • Do most pruning in the cooler months, from late autumn to early spring.
  • Watch palm trees for signs of red palm weevil, such as a drooping or lopsided crown.
